Christmas Leave Gone Wrong

Sandra and I Drove from Fort Gordon Ga. to Nashville on Christmas eve 1968. A fellow soldier who lived in Mississippi rode with us as far as Nashville. He hitchhiked the rest of the way home. After Christmas he made his way back to Nashville and we picked him up on Charlotte Ave in Nashville for the return trip. The deep snow made travel difficult but we had no choice but to make it back to Fort Gordon on time. Late arrival was not an option nor would it be tolerated.

Arriving back at the fort we discovered that we were immediately being transferred, him to Vietnam and myself to Germany. We picked up our overseas orders and cleared post. I flew to Europe and landed in Frankfort. His plane was shot down while landing at Danang airport in Vietnam. There were no survivors.

Merry Christmas to all!
